शल्य ने कहा — जल से वरुण को कौन मार सकता है? ईंधन से अग्नि को कौन बुझा सकता है? वायु को कौन पकड़ सकता है, और समुद्र को कौन पी सकता है? पार्थ को पीड़ित करने का तुम्हारा यह प्रयास मुझे ऐसा ही असम्भव लगता है। देवता और असुर मिलकर, स्वयं इन्द्र के नेतृत्व में भी, अर्जुन को युद्ध में परास्त नहीं कर सकते। अथवा, यदि तुम्हें सन्तोष हो, तो उन वचनों को कहकर — कि तुम पार्थ का वध कर सकते हो — निश्चिन्त हो जाओ। पार्थ को युद्ध में जीता नहीं जा सकता। जो अन्य उद्देश्य तुम्हारे मन में हो, उसे पूर्ण करो। जो इस पृथ्वी को उठाने का साहस करे उसकी दोनों भुजाओं को काट सके, या क्रोध में समस्त प्राणियों को भस्म कर सके, या देवताओं को स्वर्ग से नीचे गिरा सके — वही अर्जुन को युद्ध में जीत सकता है। देखो, कुन्ती के उस दूसरे वीर पुत्र भीम को, जो परिश्रम से कभी नहीं थकता, जो तेज से दीप्तिमान है, महाबाहु है, और दूसरे मेरु की भाँति अडिग खड़ा है। सदा प्रज्वलित क्रोध और प्रतिशोध की अभिलाषा लिए, महाबली भीम वहाँ विजय की इच्छा से खड़ा है और अपने समस्त अपमानों को स्मरण कर रहा है। वहाँ धर्मराज युधिष्ठिर — धर्मात्माओं में अग्रणी, शत्रु-नगरों को जीतने वाले — युद्ध में शत्रुओं द्वारा दुर्निवार होकर खड़े हैं। वहाँ नकुल और सहदेव — अश्विनीकुमारों के वे दोनों पुत्र, पुरुषों में दो व्याघ्र — युद्ध में अजेय होकर खड़े हैं। वहाँ कृष्णा के पाँचों पुत्र दिखाई दे रहे हैं, जिनका रूप पाञ्चाल राजकुमारों के समान है। वे सभी युद्ध में अर्जुन के समकक्ष हैं और युद्ध की अभिलाषा लिए खड़े हैं। वहाँ धृष्टद्युम्न के नेतृत्व में द्रुपद के पुत्र, गर्व और तेज से भरे हुए, महापराक्रमी वीर, अपना स्थान ग्रहण किए हुए हैं। वहाँ सात्वतों में अग्रणी सात्यकि, इन्द्र के समान अप्रतिरोध्य, युद्ध की इच्छा से प्रलयकाल के यम की भाँति क्रोध में हमारी ओर बढ़ रहा है। इस प्रकार वे दोनों पुरुषसिंह परस्पर वार्तालाप कर ही रहे थे कि दोनों सेनाएँ गङ्गा और यमुना की धाराओं की भाँति युद्ध में भीषण रूप से एक-दूसरे से जा मिलीं। धृतराष्ट्र ने कहा — हे सञ्जय, जब दोनों सेनाएँ इस प्रकार व्यूहबद्ध होकर युद्ध के लिए परस्पर मिलीं, तब पार्थ ने संशप्तकों पर कैसे आक्रमण किया और कर्ण ने पाण्डवों पर कैसे? तुम वर्णन में कुशल हो, अतः इस युद्ध का विवरण विस्तारपूर्वक मुझे सुनाओ। वीरों के पराक्रम की कथाएँ सुनते हुए मेरी तृप्ति नहीं होती।
English Summary
"Salya said, — 'Who is there that would slay Varuna with water, or quench fire with fuel ? Who is there that would seize the wind, or drink off the ocean ? I regard thy act of afflicting Partha to be even such. Arjuna is incapable of being vanquished in battle by the very gods and the Asura* united together and having Indra himself at their head. Or, suffer thyself to be gratified, and be of easy mind, having said those words (about thy capacity to slay Partha. Partha can- not be conquered in battle. Accomplish some other purpose thou mayst have in thy mind. He that would uplift this Earth on 17 130 MAHABHARATA his two arms, or burn all creatures in wrath, or hurl the gods from heaven, may vanquish Arjuna in battle. Behold that other heroic son of Kunti, viz., Bhima, who is never fatigued with exertion, blazing with resplendence, mighty-armed, and standing like another Meru. With wrath ever kindled and longing for revenge, Bhima of great energy stands there desirous of victory in battle, and remember- ing all his injuries. There that foremost of virtuous men, viz., king Yudhisthira the just, that subjugator of hostile towns, stands difficult of being resisted by foes in battle. There stand those two tigers among men, the twin Aswins, the two uterine brothers Nakula and Sahadeva, both invincible in battle. Yonder may be seen the five sons of Krishna, that have the features of Panchala princes. All of them, equal to Arjuna in battle, are standing, desirous of fight. There the sons of Drupada, headed by Dhristadyumna, swelling with pride and energy, — heroes endued with great energy, — have taken up their stand. There, that foremost one among the Satwatas, viz., Satyaki, irresisti- ble like Indra, advanceth against us, from desire of fight, like the destroyer himself in wrath before our eyes.' — While those two lions among men were thus addressing each other, the two armies mingled fiercely in battle, like the currents of the Ganga and Yamuna." SECTION XL VII The Encounter Begins Dhritarashtra said, — "When the two armies, duly arrayed, thus mingled with each other for battle, O San jay a, how did Partha assail the Samsaptakas, and how Kama, the Pandavas ? Tell me the incidents of the battle in detail, for thou art skilled in narration. Listening to the accounts of the prowess of heroes in battle, I am never satiated."
