महारथी कृतवर्मा ने वेग से आगे बढ़कर धृष्टद्युम्न को रोका, जब वे शारद्वत-पुत्र कृप की ओर बढ़ रहे थे। तत्पश्चात् द्रोण-पुत्र ने युधिष्ठिर को रोका, जब वे वह (शकुनि) अपने पुत्र और सेना सहित शारद्वत-पुत्र के रथ की ओर वेग से बढ़ रहा था। तुम्हारे पुत्र दुर्योधन ने बाणों की वर्षा करते हुए उन दोनों महारथियों — नकुल और सहदेव — को, जो अपनी गति के लिए प्रसिद्ध थे, रोक लिया। हे भारत, वैकर्तन कर्ण ने उस युद्ध में भीमसेन को तथा करूषों, कैकयों और शृञ्जयों को भी रोके रखा। इसी बीच, हे तात, शारद्वत-पुत्र (कृप) ने उस संग्राम में बड़ी तत्परता के साथ शिखण्डी पर अनेक बाण छोड़े, मानो उसे भस्म ही कर देना चाहते हों। किन्तु पाञ्चाल-राजकुमार ने अपनी तलवार को बार-बार घुमाते हुए, कृप द्वारा चारों ओर से छोड़े गए उन सभी सुवर्ण-भूषित बाणों को काट डाला। तब गौतम के पौत्र (कृप) ने शीघ्रता से अपने बाणों द्वारा पृषत-पुत्र की उस ढाल को काट दिया जो सौ चन्द्रमाओं से सुशोभित थी। उनके इस पराक्रम पर सेना में जयघोष का महानाद उठा। हे नरेश, ढाल से रहित होकर और कृप के वश में पड़कर भी शिखण्डी हाथ में तलवार लिए उनकी ओर दौड़ा — ठीक वैसे जैसे कोई रोगी मृत्यु के मुख की ओर चला जाता है। तब हे राजन्, चित्रकेतु के पुत्र सुकेतु ने, जो इस प्रकार कृप के बाणों से पीड़ित और संकट में पड़े महाबली शिखण्डी को देखा, तत्काल उनकी सहायता के लिए प्रस्थान किया। वह अपरिमित आत्मबल से सम्पन्न युवा राजकुमार शारद्वत-पुत्र के रथ की ओर बढ़ा और उस युद्ध में उस ब्राह्मण पर अत्यन्त तीक्ष्ण असंख्य बाणों की वर्षा कर दी। उस व्रतनिष्ठ ब्राह्मण को इस प्रकार युद्ध में व्यस्त देखकर, हे नरश्रेष्ठ, शिखण्डी उस स्थान से शीघ्र ही पीछे हट गए। इधर, हे राजन्, सुकेतु ने गौतम-पुत्र को नौ बाणों से बेधा, फिर सत्तर बाणों से और पुनः तीन बाणों से। तत्पश्चात्, हे तात, उस राजकुमार ने एक बाण से कृप का धनुष बाण सहित काट दिया और दूसरे बाण से उनके सारथि के एक मर्मस्थान पर कठोर प्रहार किया।
English Summary
The great car- warrior Kritavarman, however, rushing impetuous- ly received Dhrishtadyumna as the latter proceeded against the son of Saradwat (Kripa). Then Drona's son checked Yudhishthira as the latter, with his son and troops, was rushing towards the car of Sarad- wat's son. Thy son Duryodhana, shooting a shower of arrows, received and checked Nakula and Sahadeva, those two great car-warriors en- dued with celerity. Kama too, otherwise called Vaikartana, O Bharata, in that battle, resisted Bhimasena, and the Karushas, the Kaikayas, and the Srinjayas. Meanwhile Saradwat's son, in that battle, O sire, with great activity, sped many arrows at Sikhandin, as if for the purpose of burning him outright. The Panchala prince, however, whirling his sword repeatedly, cut off all those arrows, decked with gold, that had been sped at him by Kripa from all sides. The grandson of Gautama (Kripa) then quickly cut off with his arrows the shield of Prishata's son, that was decked with hundred moons. At this feat of his, the troops made a loud uproar. Deprived of his shield, O monarch, and placed under Kripa's power Sikhandin still rushed, sword in hand, (towards Kripa), like a sick man towards the jaws of Death. Then Suketu, the son of Shitraketu, O king, quickly proceeded towards the mighty Sikhandin plunged into such distress and assailed in that man- ner by Kripa with his arrows. Indeed, the young prince of immeasur- able soul rushed towards the car of Saradwat's son and poured upon that Brahmana, in that battle, innumerable shafts of great keenness. Behold- ing that Brahmana observant of vows thus engaged in battle (with another), Sikhandin, O best of kings, retreated hastily from that spot. Meanwhile Suketu, O king, piercing the son of Gautama with nine arrows, once more pierced him with seventy and again with three. Then the prince, O sire, cut off Kripa's bow with arrow fixed thereon, and with another shaft struck hard the latter's driver in a vital limb.
