धूल का एक विशाल बादल उठकर आकाश में छत्र की भाँति छा गया है। हे कर्ण, अर्जुन के रथ-चक्रों की परिधि से धरती गहरी कट गई है और सम्पूर्ण पृथ्वी काँपती-सी प्रतीत होती है। तुम्हारी सेना के दोनों ओर प्रचण्ड वायु बह रही है। माँसभक्षी प्राणी ऊँचे स्वर में चीख रहे हैं और पशु भयावह आर्तनाद कर रहे हैं। हे कर्ण, देखो — वाष्पमय रूप धारण किए हुए वह भयंकर और अपशकुनी केतु, जो रोंगटे खड़े कर देता है, सूर्य को ढककर प्रकट हो गया है। देखो, चारों ओर बड़े-बड़े झुण्डों में अनेक प्रकार के पशु, असंख्य भेड़िये और बाघ सूर्य की ओर मुख किए खड़े हैं। देखो, वे भयंकर काँक पक्षी और गिद्ध हजारों की संख्या में एकत्र होकर एक-दूसरे के सम्मुख बैठे हैं, मानो परस्पर वार्तालाप कर रहे हों। तुम्हारे महारथ पर लगी रंग-बिरंगी चँवरियाँ अस्थिर होकर हिल रही हैं। तुम्हारी ध्वजा भी काँप रही है। देखो, तुम्हारे ये सुन्दर अश्व, जो विशाल अंगों वाले और उड़ते पक्षियों के समान वेगशाली हैं, वे भी थरथरा रहे हैं। इन अपशकुनों से यह निश्चित है कि हे कर्ण, सैकड़ों और हजारों राजा प्राणहीन होकर चिरनिद्रा में धरती पर सो जाएँगे। रोंगटे खड़े कर देने वाला शंखों का प्रचण्ड घोष सुनाई दे रहा है। हे राधापुत्र, नगाड़ों और झाँझों का स्वर भी चारों दिशाओं से आ रहा है, साथ ही अनेक प्रकार के बाणों की सनसनाहट और रथों, अश्वों तथा योद्धाओं का कोलाहल भी सुनाई पड़ रहा है। हे कर्ण, महात्मा योद्धाओं की धनुष-प्रत्यञ्चाओं की प्रबल टंकार भी सुनो। हे कर्ण, देखो — अर्जुन की वे ध्वजाएँ, जो घण्टियों की पंक्तियों से सुसज्जित हैं और सुवर्णमय चन्द्रमाओं तथा तारों से विभूषित हैं।
English Summary
ascends a cloud of dust that overspreads the welkin like a canopy. The whole Earth, O Kama, seems to tremble, cut deep by the circum- ference of Arjuna's wheels. These violent winds are blowing on both sides of thy army. These carnivorous creatures are yelling aloud and these animals are uttering fearful cries. Behold, O Kama, the terrible and portentuous Ketu of vapoury form, making the hair to stand on end, hath appeared, covering the Sun.1 Behold, diverse kinds of animals, all around in large packs, and many mighty wolves and tigers, are looking at the Sun. Behold those terrible Kankas and those vultures, assembled together in thousands, sitting with faces towards one another, in seeming discourse. Those coloured yak- tails attached to thy great car are waving unquietly.* Thy standard also is trembling. Behold these thy beautiful steeds, of huge limbs and great speed resembling that of soaring birds, are also quivering. From these portents, It is certain that kings, in hundreds and thousands, O Kama, deprived of life, will lie down on the ground for eternal sleep. The loud uproar of conchs, making the hair to stand on end, is being heard. The sound also of drums and cymbals, O son of Radha, is being heard on all sides, as also the whizz tof diverse kinds of arrows, and the din made by cars and steeds and men. Listen also, O Kama, to the loud twang produced by the bow-strings of high-souled warriors. Behold, O Kama, those banners of Arjuna, that are equipt with rows of bells, and decked with golden moons and stars.
