देवताओं के स्वामी के समान, मनुष्यों में वृषभ वह वीर, अपने रथ पर सब दिशाओं में एक साथ दृष्टिगोचर होता था — अपने महाशस्त्र बरसाता, रथ-मार्ग पर नृत्य करता, धनुष की प्रत्यञ्चा और हथेलियों से कानों को बहरा कर देने वाला नाद उत्पन्न करता, और आकाश में तपती दोपहर के सूर्य के समान प्रज्वलित दिखता था। अपने दीप्तिमान बाणों को धारण किए, मस्तक पर मुकुट सजाए अर्जुन ऐसा सुन्दर लग रहा था जैसे वर्षा ऋतु में इन्द्रधनुष से सुशोभित जलभरे मेघों का विशाल समूह हो। जब जिष्णु ने उस महाशस्त्रों की प्रचण्ड बाढ़ को प्रवाहित किया, तो योद्धाओं में अनेक श्रेष्ठ वीर उस भयावह और अगाध प्रवाह में डूब गए। वह रणभूमि क्रोधोन्मत्त हाथियों से भरी पड़ी थी जिनकी सूँड़ें और दाँत कट चुके थे; ऐसे अश्वों से जिनके खुर और गर्दनें छिन्न हो गई थीं; टुकड़े-टुकड़े हुए रथों से; ऐसे योद्धाओं से जिनकी अँतड़ियाँ बाहर निकल आई थीं और जिनके पैर तथा अन्य अंग कट गए थे; और सैकड़ों-हजारों शवों से जो या तो पूर्णतः निश्चल पड़े थे या अचेत अवस्था में हिल रहे थे। हे राजन्, पार्थ की उस रणभूमि को देखकर हमें ऐसा प्रतीत हुआ मानो यह मृत्यु की अभीष्ट क्रीड़ास्थली हो जो कायरों के भय को और भी बढ़ा रही हो, अथवा जैसे रुद्र का वह विहारक्षेत्र हो जहाँ उन्होंने पुराकाल में प्राणियों का संहार किया था। क्षुरप्र बाणों से कटी हाथियों की सूँड़ों से जो भूभाग ढका था, वह सर्पों से आच्छादित-सा दिखता था। जो भाग योद्धाओं के कटे हुए मस्तकों से पटा था, वह कमल-मालाओं से बिछा हुआ-सा प्रतीत होता था। सुन्दर शिरस्त्राण और मुकुटों से, केयूरों और अंगदों से, कुण्डलों से, सुवर्ण-जटित कवचों से, हाथियों और अश्वों के आभूषणों और साज-सज्जा से, तथा इधर-उधर बिखरे सैकड़ों मुकुटों से वह धरती ऐसी अपूर्व सुन्दर लग रही थी जैसे कोई नवविवाहिता वधू हो।
English Summary
chief of the gods himself, that bull among men, seen at the same time in all directions on his car, scattering his mighty weapons, dancing in the tract of his car, and producing deafening sounds with his bowstring and palms, and resembling the midday sun of scorching rays in the firmament. Bearing his shafts of blazing points, the diadem-decked Arjuna looked beautiful like a mighty mass of rain-charged clouds in the season of rains decked with a rainbow. When that perfect flood of mighty weapons was set in motion by Jishnu, many bulls among warriors sank in that frightful and unfordable flood Strewn with infuriated elephants whose trunks or tusks had been cut off, with steeds deprived of hoofs or necks, with cars reduced to pieces, with warriors having their entrails drawn out and others with legs or other limbs cut off, with bodies lying in hundreds and thousands that were either per- fectly still or moving unconsciously, we beheld the vast field, on which Partha battled, resembled the coveted arena of Death, O king, enhancing the terrors of the timid, or like the sporting ground of Rudra when he destroyed creatures in days of old. Portions of the field, strewn with the trunks of elephants cut off with razor-headed arrows, looked as if strewn with snakes. Portions, again, covered with the cut-off heads of warriors, looked as if strewn with garlands of lotuses. Varie- gated with beautiful head gear and crowns, Keyuras and Angadas and ear-rings with coats of mail decked with gold, and with the trappings and other ornaments of elephants and steeds, and scattered over with hundreds of diadems, lying here and there, and the earth looked exceedingly beautiful like a new bride.
