गान्धारी ने कहा — हे शत्रुदमन, उनसे विरोध का विचार कभी मन में मत लाओ। आज तुम उसी (शान्तिपूर्ण)양보 के फल को देख रहे हो — उन वीरों ने समस्त कण्टकों को दूर करके सम्पूर्ण पृथ्वी पर तुम्हारा आधिपत्य स्थापित किया है। हे शत्रुदमन, पाण्डु-पुत्रों को उनका उचित भाग दो। यदि तुम अपने मन्त्रियों सहित आधे राज्य का भी उपभोग करना चाहते हो, तो उनका भाग उन्हें दे दो। आधी पृथ्वी तुम्हारे और तुम्हारे मन्त्रियों के पालन-पोषण के लिए पर्याप्त है। हे भारत, अपने हितैषियों के वचनों के अनुसार आचरण करने से तुम्हें महान यश की प्राप्ति होगी। पाण्डु-पुत्र समृद्धिशाली हैं, उनकी आत्मा पूर्णतः वश में है, वे महाबुद्धिमान हैं और उन्होंने अपनी इन्द्रियों को जीत लिया है — उनसे विरोध केवल तुम्हारी महान समृद्धि का नाश करेगा। अपने सभी हितैषियों के क्रोध को शान्त करो और हे भरतकुलश्रेष्ठ, पाण्डु-पुत्रों को उनका उचित भाग देकर अपने राज्य का शासन उचित रीति से करो। हे पुत्र, पूरे तेरह वर्षों तक पाण्डु-पुत्रों को कष्ट देना पर्याप्त हो चुका है। हे महाबुद्धिमान, लोभ और क्रोध से प्रज्वलित उस अग्नि को अब शान्त करो। तुम पाण्डवों के धन की लालसा रखते हो, किन्तु तुम उनके समकक्ष नहीं हो — न यह सूतपुत्र जो अत्यन्त क्रोधी है, न तुम्हारे यह भ्राता दुःशासन। और जब भीष्म, द्रोण, कृप और

"Gandhari said, — (continued) O chasistcr of foes, never think of disunion with them. Thou beholdst to-day the fruit of that (peaceful) cession in the fact of thy sovereignty over the whole earth, with all its thorns removed by those heroes. Give, O chastiser of foes, unto the son of Pandu what is their due. If thou wishest to enjoy, with the counsellors even half (the empire), let their share then be given unto them. Half the earth is sufficient to yield the means of support unto thee and thy counsellors. By acting according to the words of thy well-wishers, thou wilt, O Bharata, win great fame. A quarrel with the sons of Pandu who are all endued with prosperity, who have their souls under complete control, who are possessed of great intelligence and have conquered their passions, will only divest thee of thy great prosperity. Dispelling the wrath of all thy well-wishers, rule thou thy kingdom as becometh thee, giving, O bull of Bharata's race, unto the sons of Pandu the share that belongeth to them.
