वासुदेव ने कहा — हे पृथ्वीपते, यदि मैं उस समय द्वारका में होता, तो हे राजन्, यह विपत्ति तुम पर कभी न आती। हे अदम्य वीर, अम्बिका-पुत्र धृतराष्ट्र अथवा दुर्योधन अथवा अन्य कौरवों द्वारा बिना बुलाए भी मैं उस द्यूत-सभा में उपस्थित होता और भीष्म, द्रोण, कृप तथा वाह्लीक का सहारा लेकर उस खेल के अनेक दोष दिखाते हुए उसे होने से रोकता। हे महानुभाव, तुम्हारे हित के लिए मैं विचित्रवीर्य के पुत्र से कहता — हे नरेश्वर, तुम्हारे पुत्रों का द्यूत से कोई सम्बन्ध न हो। मैं उन्हें वे अनेक दोष दिखाता जिनके कारण तुम इस संकट में पड़े हो और जिनके कारण वीरसेन-पुत्र पहले अपने राज्य से वंचित हो गए थे। हे राजन्, द्यूत से मनुष्य पर ऐसी-ऐसी विपत्तियाँ आती हैं जिनकी उसने कल्पना भी नहीं की होती। मैं यह भी बताता कि जो व्यक्ति एक बार इस खेल में लग जाता है, वह जीत की लालसा में खेलता ही चला जाता है। स्त्री, द्यूत, आखेट और मद्यपान — ये चार दुर्व्यसन हैं जिनमें मनुष्य प्रलोभन के वशीभूत होकर फँस जाता है, और ये उसकी समृद्धि का नाश कर देते हैं। शास्त्रों के ज्ञाता भी यही मानते हैं कि इन सभी में दोष ही दोष हैं। जो लोग द्यूत के अभ्यस्त हैं, वे भी इसके दुष्परिणामों को भली-भाँति जानते हैं। हे महाबाहो, अम्बिका-पुत्र के समक्ष उपस्थित होकर मैं यह दिखाता कि द्यूत के कारण मनुष्य एक ही दिन में अपनी सम्पत्ति खो देता है, घोर संकट में पड़ जाता है, अपने अर्जित धन से वंचित हो जाता है और कठोर वचनों का आदान-प्रदान करता है। हे कुरुवंश के रक्षक, ये और इस प्रकार के अन्य अनेक दोष मैं उन्हें दिखाता।
English Summary
Vasudeva said, 'O lord of earth, if I had been present at Dwaraka, then, O king, this evil would not have befallen thee ! And, O irrepre- ssible one, coming unto the gambling-match, even if uninvited by the son of Amvika (Dhritarashtra), or Duryodhana, or by the other Kaura- vas, I would have prevented the game from taking place, by showing its many evils, summoning to my aid Bhishma and Drona and Kripa and Vahlika ! O exalted one, for thy sake I would have told the son of Vichitra v iry a — 0 foremost of monarchs, let thy sons have nothing to do with dice 1 — I would have shown the many evils (of dice) through which thou h ast fallen into such distress and the son of Virasena was formerly de- prived of his kingdom ! O king, unthought of evils befall a man from dice ! I would have described how a man once engaged in the game continueth to play (from desire of victory). Women,dice, hunting and drinking to which people become addicted in consequence of temptation, have been regarded as the four evils that deprive a man of prosperity. And those versed in the Sastras are of opinion that ev ils attend upon all these. They also that are addicted to dice know all its evils. O thou of mighty arms, appearing before the son of Amvika, I would have pointed out that through dice men in a day lose their possessions, and fall into distress, and are deprived of their untasted wealth, and ex- change harsh words ! O perpetuator of the Kuru race, I would hav e pointed out these and other attendant evils !
