धृतराष्ट्र ने कहा — हे सञ्जय, भूरिश्रवा के पतन के पश्चात् और सिन्धु-नरेश के वध के उपरान्त, वृष्णि-कुल के वीर सात्यकि और कर्ण के बीच जो युद्ध हुआ, वह मुझे बताओ। सात्यकि के कान कट चुके थे — फिर वह किस रथ पर आरूढ़ था? और अर्जुन के रथ के दोनों पहियों की रक्षा करने वाले दोनों पाञ्चाल राजकुमारों ने किस प्रकार युद्ध किया? सञ्जय ने कहा — उस भीषण संग्राम में जो कुछ हुआ, वह सब मैं तुम्हें सुनाता हूँ। अपने ही कुकर्मों के परिणाम को धैर्यपूर्वक सुनो। युद्ध आरम्भ होने से पहले ही श्रीकृष्ण ने अपने हृदय में जान लिया था कि वीर सात्यकि, खूँटे को ध्वज पर धारण करने वाले भूरिश्रवा के हाथों परास्त हो जाएगा।
