वैशम्पायन ने कहा — (आगे) किन्तु मैं न तो पतित हूँ और न ही आपके प्रति सम्मान में कमी करता हूँ, इसलिए हे ब्राह्मण-श्रेष्ठों, बिना किसी उचित कारण के आपको मेरे यज्ञ में विघ्न डालना अथवा मुझे इस प्रकार त्यागना उचित नहीं है। हे ब्राह्मणों, मैं आपसे रक्षा की याचना करता हूँ। आप मुझ पर प्रसन्न हों। किन्तु हे ब्राह्मण-श्रेष्ठों, यदि आप केवल शत्रुता अथवा किसी अनुचित भाव से मुझे त्यागते हैं, तो मैं इस यज्ञ के लिए अन्य पुरोहितों के पास जाऊँगा। मधुर वचनों और दान से उन्हें प्रसन्न करके अपना कार्य उनके समक्ष रखूँगा, जिससे वे उसे सम्पन्न कर सकें। यह कहकर राजा मौन हो गए। हे शत्रुदमन, जब उन पुरोहितों को भली-भाँति ज्ञात था कि वे राजा के यज्ञ में सहायता नहीं कर सकते, तब भी उन्होंने क्रोध का आश्रय लिया और उस राजश्रेष्ठ से बोले — हे राजश्रेष्ठ, तुम्हारे यज्ञों का कोई अन्त नहीं है। तुम्हारी निरन्तर सहायता करते-करते हम सब थक गए हैं। इन परिश्रमों से हम अत्यन्त क्लान्त हो चुके हैं, इसलिए तुम्हें हमें विश्राम की अनुमति देनी चाहिए। हे निष्पाप, विवेक के अभाव में तुम रुक नहीं पाते और हमें बार-बार आग्रह करते रहते हो। रुद्र के पास जाओ, वे तुम्हारे यज्ञ में सहायता करेंगे। यह सुनकर निन्दा और क्रोध के उन वचनों से राजा श्वेताकि कुपित हो उठे। तब वे राजा कैलास पर्वत की ओर चले गए और वहाँ तपस्या में लीन हो गए। हे राजन्, उस नरेश ने एकाग्र चित्त से और कठोर व्रतों का पालन करते हुए महादेव की आराधना आरम्भ की। कभी-कभी भोजन का सर्वथा त्याग करते हुए उन्होंने दीर्घ काल व्यतीत किया। राजा कभी दिन के बारहवें प्रहर में और कभी सोलहवें प्रहर में केवल फल और मूल ग्रहण करते थे। राजा श्वेताकि छः मास तक भूमि में स्थिर वृक्ष के तने अथवा स्तम्भ के समान, दोनों भुजाएँ ऊपर उठाए और दृष्टि एकाग्र किए, अचल खड़े रहे। हे भारत, तब शंकर उस राजश्रेष्ठ की ऐसी कठोर तपस्या से प्रसन्न होकर अन्ततः उन्हें दर्शन देने आए। देव ने उस नरेश से शान्त और गम्भीर स्वर में कहा — हे राजश्रेष्ठ, हे शत्रुदमन, तुम्हारी तपस्या से मैं प्रसन्न हूँ। तुम्हारा कल्याण हो। हे राजन्, अब जो वर तुम्हारी अभिलाषा हो, वह माँगो। अपरिमित तेजस्वी रुद्र के ये वचन सुनकर उस राजर्षि ने उस महात्मा देव को प्रणाम किया और बोले — हे प्रभो, हे त्रिलोकपूज्य, यदि आप मुझ पर प्रसन्न हैं, तो हे देवाधिदेव, हे देवेश्वर, मेरे यज्ञ में आप स्वयं सहायता करें।
English Summary
Vaisampayana said,— (continued) But as I am neither degraded nor wanting in homage to you, It behoveth you not to obstruct the performance by me of my sacrifice or to abandon me thus, ye foremost of Brahmanas, without adequate reason ! I seek ye Brahmanas, your protection ! It behoveth you to be propitious unto me ! But, ye foremost of Brahmanas, if you abandon me from enmity alone or any improper motive, I shall go unto other priests for their assistance in this sacrifice of mine, and conciliating them by sweet words and gifts, I shall represent unto them the business I have on hand, so that they may accomplish It-' Having said this, the monarch became silent. And, O chastiser of foes when those priests well knew that they could not assist at the king's sacrifice, they pre- tended to be angry, and addressing that best of monarchs, said, — 'O best of kings, thy sacrifices are incessant ! By assisting thee always, we have all been fatigued. And as we have been wearied in conse- quence of these labours, It behoveth thee to give us leave ! O sinless one, from loss of judgement thou canst not wait, (but urgest us repea- tedly). Go unto Rudra I He will assist at they sacrifice !' Hearing those words of censure and wrath, king Swetaki became angry. And the monarch wending to the mountains of Kailasa, devoted himself to asce- ticism there. And, O king, the monarch began to worship Mahadeva, with fixed attention, and by observing the most rigid vows. And fore- going all food at times, he passed a long period. The monarch ate only fruits and roots sometimes at the twelfth and sometimes at the sixteenth hour of the whole day (of twenty four hours). King Swetaki stood for six months, rapt in attention, with arms upraised and steadfast eyes, like the trunk of a tree or a column rooted to the ground. And O Bharata, Sankara at last, gratified with that tiger among kings, who was undergoing such hard penances, showed himself unto him. And the god spake unto the monarch in a calm and grave tone, saying, — O tiger among kings, O chastiser of foes, I have been gratified with thee for thy asceticism ! Blest be thou I Ask now the boon that thou, O king, desirest !' Hearing these words of Rudra of immeasurable energy, the royal sage bowed unto that Mgh-souled deity and replied, saying, — 'O illustrious one, O thou that art worshipped by the three worlds, if thou hast been gratified with me t!:2n, O god of gods, assist me thyself, O lord of the celestials, in my sacrifice !
