वह पीछे हटा, फिर शत्रुओं से जा भिड़ा और उन्हें कड़ी टक्कर दी। द्रोण के वध के लिए रणभूमि में विचरते हुए उसने भारत, कौशिक और सात्वत नामक युद्ध-कलाओं का भी कुशलतापूर्वक प्रदर्शन किया। हाथ में तलवार और ढाल लिए रणभूमि में विचरते धृष्टद्युम्न की उन सुन्दर युद्ध-कलाओं को देखकर वहाँ उपस्थित समस्त योद्धा और देवगण भी विस्मय से भर गए। तब ब्राह्मणश्रेष्ठ द्रोण ने घमासान युद्ध में एक हजार बाण छोड़कर धृष्टद्युम्न की तलवार और सौ चन्द्रमाओं से सुसज्जित उसकी ढाल काट दी। द्रोण ने इतने निकट से जो बाण चलाए, वे एक बित्ते भर लम्बे थे। ऐसे बाण केवल अत्यन्त निकट के युद्ध में ही काम आते हैं। कृप, पार्थ, अश्वत्थामा, कर्ण, प्रद्युम्न, युयुधान और अभिमन्यु को छोड़कर अन्य किसी के पास ऐसे बाण नहीं थे। तब आचार्य ने अपने उस शिष्य को — जो उन्हें अपने पुत्र के समान प्रिय था — मारने की इच्छा से अपने धनुष पर एक अत्यन्त वेगवान बाण चढ़ाया। किन्तु तुम्हारे पुत्र और महात्मा कर्ण के देखते-देखते सात्यकि ने दस बाणों से उस शर को काट दिया और द्रोण के हाथों मृत्यु के कगार पर खड़े धृष्टद्युम्न को बचा लिया। हे भारत, तब केशव और धनञ्जय ने देखा कि सात्यकि कुरु-योद्धाओं के रथ-मार्गों में और द्रोण, कर्ण तथा कृप के बाणों की मार के भीतर भी अप्रतिम पराक्रम के साथ विचर रहा है। दोनों ने "साधु! साधु!" कहकर उस अक्षय-यशस्वी सात्यकि की उच्च स्वर से प्रशंसा की, जो उन सभी योद्धाओं के दिव्यास्त्रों को नष्ट कर रहा था। तत्पश्चात् केशव और धनञ्जय कौरवों की ओर बढ़े।

and receded backwards, and closed with his foes, and pressed them hard. Having practised them well, he also showed the evolutions called Bharata, Kausika Satwata, as he careered in that battle for compassing tho destruc- tion of Drona. Beholding those beautiful evolutions of Dhrishtadyumna, as he careered on the field, sword and shield in hand, all the warriors, as also the celestials assembled there, were filled with wonder. The regenerate Drona then, shooting a thousand arrows in the thick of fight, cut off the sword of Dhrishtadyumna as also his shield, decked with a hundred moons. Those arrows that Drona shot, while fighting from such a near point, were of the length of a span. Such arrows are used only in close fight. None else have arrows of that kind, except Kripa, and Partha, and Aswatthaman and Kama, Pradyumna and Yuyudhana ; Abhimanyu also had such arrows. Then the preceptor, desirous of slaying his disciple who was unto him even as his own son, fixed on his bow-string a shaft endued with great impetuo- sity. That shaft, however, Satyaki cut off by means of ten arrows, in the very sight of thy son as also of the high-souled Kama, as thus rescued Dhrishtadyumna who was on the point of succumbing to Drona. Then Kesava and Dhananjaya beheld Satyaki of prowess incapable of being baffled, who, 0 Bharata, was thus careering in the car- tracks (of the Kuru warriors) and within the range of the shafts of Drona and Kama and Kripa. Saying, 'Excellent, Excellent ! both of them loudly applauded Satyaki of unfading glory, who was thus destroying the celestial weapons of all those warriors. Then Kesava andDhananjaya rushed towards the Kurus.
