उसे व्याकुल और शोक से लगभग विचेतन देखकर, पाञ्चाल नरेश का वह क्रूरकर्मा पुत्र उसकी ओर दौड़ा। अपने वधकर्ता के रूप में नियत उस राजकुमार को देखकर, मनुष्यों और वस्तुओं के समस्त सत्यों से परिचित द्रोण ने अपने सभी दिव्यास्त्र त्याग दिए और रणभूमि में प्रायोपवेशन कर लिया। तब पृषत के पुत्र ने अपने बाएँ हाथ से द्रोण का शीश पकड़कर, समस्त वीरों के ऊँचे स्वर में किए गए निषेध की उपेक्षा करते हुए, उस शीश को काट डाला। चारों ओर से यही वचन उठ रहे थे कि द्रोण का वध नहीं होना चाहिए। इसी प्रकार अर्जुन भी अपने रथ से कूदकर, भुजाएँ उठाए हुए, बार-बार यह कहते हुए शीघ्र पृषत-पुत्र की ओर दौड़े — "हे धर्म के मार्ग को जाननेवाले, आचार्य का वध मत करो, उन्हें जीवित पकड़ लाओ।" कौरवों के तथा अर्जुन के इस प्रकार रोकने पर भी धृष्टद्युम्न ने तुम्हारे पिता का वध कर दिया। इसी कारण भय से पीड़ित होकर सारी सेना भाग रही है। हे निष्पाप, हम भी उसी कारण अत्यन्त विषाद में डूबे हुए वैसा ही कर रहे हैं।
English Summary
Beholding him filled with anxiety, and almost deprived of his senses by grief, the son of the Panchala king, of cruel deeds, rushed towards him. Seeing the prince who bad been ordained as his slayer, Drona, versed in all truths about men and things, abandoned all his celestial weapons and sat in Praya on the field of battle. Then Prishata's son, seizing Drona's head with his left hand, and disregarding the loud admonitions of all the heroes, cut off that head.' Drona should not be slain, even these were the words uttered from every side. Similarly, Arjuna also, jumping down from his car, quickly ran towards Prishata's son, with arms upraised and repeatedly saying, '0 thou that art acquainted with the ways of morality, do not slay the preceptor but bring him alive.' Though thus forbidden by the Kaura- vas as also by Arjuna, Dhrishtadyumna killed thy father. For this, afflicted with fear, the troops are all flying away. Ourselves also, for the same reason, in great cheerlessness, 0 sinless one, are doing the same.'
