सञ्जय ने कहा — हे राजन्, धनञ्जय ने जब अपना धनुष खींचा, तब उसकी टंकार सुनाई दी — मानो साक्षात् काल की भयंकर ललकार हो, या युग के अन्त में इन्द्र के वज्र का भीषण घोष हो। वह ध्वनि सुनते ही आपकी सेना भय से व्याकुल हो उठी और अत्यन्त विचलित हो गई — ठीक वैसे जैसे युगान्त की प्रलय-वायु से समुद्र का जल उद्वेलित हो जाता है, जिसमें मछलियाँ और मकर भरे हों, और जो पर्वत-सी ऊँची लहरों में उफनने लगे। तत्पश्चात् पृथापुत्र धनञ्जय युद्धभूमि में इस प्रकार विचरण करने लगे कि वे एक ही समय सभी दिशाओं में दिखाई देते थे और अपने अद्भुत अस्त्रों का प्रदर्शन करते थे। हे राजन्, पाण्डुपुत्र के हाथ इतने फुर्तीले थे कि हम यह नहीं देख पाते थे कि उन्होंने बाण कब निकाला, कब प्रत्यञ्चा पर चढ़ाया, कब धनुष खींचा और कब छोड़ दिया। तब हे राजन्, महाबाहु धनञ्जय क्रोध से भर उठे और उन्होंने समस्त भारतवंशियों को भयभीत करने वाले अजेय ऐन्द्र अस्त्र का आह्वान किया। उस अस्त्र से मन्त्रों द्वारा दिव्यास्त्र का बल प्राप्त कर सैकड़ों-हजारों अग्निमुखी, प्रज्वलित बाण प्रवाहित होने लगे। अग्नि और सूर्य की किरणों के समान वे बाण प्रचण्ड वेग से चारों ओर दौड़ने लगे और आकाश उल्काओं से भरा हुआ-सा दिखने लगा — उसकी ओर दृष्टि उठाना भी असम्भव हो गया। कौरवों के बाणों से जो घोर अन्धकार छा गया था, जिसे दूसरे योद्धा कल्पना में भी नहीं हटा सकते थे — उस अन्धकार को पाण्डुपुत्र ने रणभूमि में विचरण करते हुए, अपना पराक्रम प्रकट करते हुए, उन मन्त्र-सिद्ध दिव्यास्त्र-बाणों से उसी प्रकार नष्ट कर दिया, जैसे सूर्य प्रभात होते ही अपनी किरणों से रात्रि के अन्धकार को शीघ्र ही दूर कर देता है।

Indeed, so light-handed was the son of Pandu that we could not mark when he took out his shafts, O king, when he fixed them on the bow-string, when he stretched the bow, and when he let them off. Then the mighty-armed one, O king, excited with wrath, invoked into edstence the invincible Aindra weapon, frightening all the Bharatas. Hundreds and thousands of blazing shafts of fiery mouths, inspired by mantras with the force of celestial weapons, flowed from It. With those shafts resembling fire or the rays of the sun, coursing with fierce impetuosity, the welkin became incapable of being gazed at, as if filled with flashing meteors. Then that darkness which had been caused by the Kaurava with their arrows, which was incapable of being dis- persed even in imagination by others, the son of Pandu, careering around and displaying his prowess, destroyed by means of those shafts of his that were inspired by means of mantras with the force of celestial weapons, like the sun himself speedily dispersing at dawn of day the darkness of night by means of his rays.
