तब द्रोणाचार्य ने एक और दिव्य धनुष उठाया, जो अङ्गिरस ने उन्हें दिया था, और कुछ ऐसे बाण उठाए जो ब्राह्मण के शाप के समान भीषण थे — और वे धृष्टद्युम्न के साथ युद्ध करते रहे। उन्होंने पाञ्चाल राजकुमार को बाणों की घनी वर्षा से ढक दिया और क्रोध से भरकर अपने क्रुद्ध प्रतिद्वन्द्वी को घायल किया। अपने तीखे बाणों से उन्होंने राजकुमार के बाणों को, उनकी ध्वजा को और उनके धनुष को सैकड़ों टुकड़ों में काट दिया। फिर उन्होंने धृष्टद्युम्न के सारथि को भी गिरा दिया। तब धृष्टद्युम्न ने मुस्कुराते हुए दूसरा धनुष उठाया और द्रोणाचार्य को एक तीखे बाण से वक्षस्थल के मध्य में बेध दिया। उस प्रहार से गहरे आहत होकर और युद्ध में विचलित होकर, उस महान धनुर्धर ने एक तीखे और चौड़े फलवाले बाण से धृष्टद्युम्न का धनुष फिर से काट दिया। हे राजन्, अजेय द्रोणाचार्य ने तब अपने प्रतिद्वन्द्वी के सभी अस्त्र-शस्त्र और सभी धनुष काट डाले — केवल उनकी गदा और तलवार को छोड़कर। तब क्रोध से भरे द्रोणाचार्य ने, हे शत्रुताड़न, क्रुद्ध धृष्टद्युम्न को नौ तीखे बाणों से बेधा, जो प्रत्येक शत्रु के प्राण हरने में समर्थ थे। तब महान रथी धृष्टद्युम्न ने, जिनकी आत्मा अपरिमेय थी, ब्रह्मास्त्र का आवाहन किया और उससे अपने ही रथ के अश्वों को दिव्यास्त्र सभी जीवित शक्तियाँ थीं, जो अपने आह्वान करने वाले के आदेश पर प्रकट होती थीं। किन्तु जिस व्यक्ति की मृत्यु निकट होती थी, उसे वे मन्त्रों से बुलाए जाने पर भी त्याग देती थीं।

Then taking up another celestial bow that Angiras had given him, and certain arrows that resembled a Brahmana's curse, he continued to fight with Dhrishtadyumna. He covered the Panchala prince with a thick shower of arrows, and filled with rage, mangled his angry antagonist. With his own keen shafts he cut off in a hundred fragments those of the prince as also the latter's standard and bow. He then felled his antagonist's driver. Then Dhrishtadyumna, smiling, took up another bow, and pierced Drona with a keen shaft in the centre of the chest. Deeply pierced therewith and losing his self- possession in that encounter, that mighty bowman, then, with a sharp and broad-headed arrow, once more cut off Dhrishtadyumna's bow. Indeed, the invincible Drona then cut off all the weapons, 0 king, and all the bowp that his antagonist had, with the exception only of his mace and sword. Filled with rage, he then pierced the angry Dhrishtftdyumna, 0 ohastiser of foes, with nine keen arrows, capable of taking^ the life of every foe.
