वैशम्पायन ने कहा — हे राजन्, इन सबको दण्ड देने की बात करें तो मैं इन सभी क्रोधोन्मत्त लोगों को एक साथ दण्ड देने में समर्थ हूँ, किन्तु मैं कोई पापकर्म या निन्दनीय कार्य नहीं करूँगा। पाण्डवों की सम्पत्ति का लोभ करते हुए तेरे पुत्र अपना सर्वस्व खो देंगे। यदि वे ऐसा कृत्य करना चाहते हैं, तो युधिष्ठिर का उद्देश्य सहज ही सिद्ध हो जाएगा, क्योंकि हे भारत, आज ही मैं इन सबको इनके अनुयायियों सहित बन्दी बनाकर पृथा के पुत्रों को सौंप सकता हूँ। मेरे लिए कौन-सी वस्तु दुर्लभ है? किन्तु हे भारत, हे महाराज, तेरे सम्मुख मैं ऐसा कोई निन्दनीय कार्य नहीं करूँगा जो केवल क्रोध और पापबुद्धि से उत्पन्न हो। हे राजन्, जैसी इस दुर्योधन की इच्छा हो, वैसा ही हो। मैं तेरे सभी पुत्रों को ऐसा करने की अनुमति देता हूँ।
English Summary
Vaisampayana said, — (continued) O monarch, as regards my chastising them, for I dare chastise all of them together that are so excited with rage, I will not, however, perpetrate any sinful and censur- able act. Coveting the possessions of the Pandavas, thy sons will lose their own. If they desire to perpetrate such a deed, Yudhishthira's object will then be (easily) accomplished, for, this very day, O Bharata* seizing these with all that follow them, I can make them over to the sons of Pritha. What is there that is difficult of attainment by me ? I will not, however, O Bharata, commit in thy presence, O great monarch, any such censurable deed, that can proceed only from wrath and a sin- ful understanding. Let It be, O king, as this Duryodhana desireth. I give permission, O monarch, to all thy sons to do It.'
