जब युद्ध सर्वत्र फैलकर अव्यवस्थित हो गया, तब धर्मपुत्र युधिष्ठिर ने पाञ्चालों और मत्स्यों के सभी प्रमुख योद्धाओं को सम्बोधित करते हुए कहा — "जो हमारे प्राण हैं, जो हमारे मस्तक हैं, जो हम में महाबली हैं — वे नरश्रेष्ठ वीर धार्तराष्ट्रों के साथ युद्ध में संलग्न हैं। फिर तुम यहाँ मूढ़ और चेतनाशून्य की भाँति क्यों खड़े हो? वहाँ जाओ, जहाँ मेरी सेना के रथी युद्ध कर रहे हैं। भय को त्यागकर और क्षत्रिय-धर्म को सामने रखकर युद्ध करो — चाहे विजय मिले या वीरगति, दोनों में ही तुम्हें श्रेष्ठ गति प्राप्त होगी। यदि विजयी हुए, तो ब्राह्मणों को प्रचुर दक्षिणा देकर अनेक यज्ञ कर सकोगे। यदि वीरगति को प्राप्त हुए, तो देवताओं के समान होकर अनेक पुण्यलोकों को पाओगे।" राजा के इस प्रकार प्रेरित करने पर वे वीर और बलशाली रथी, क्षत्रिय-धर्म का पालन करते हुए, शीघ्रता से द्रोण की ओर बढ़े। पाञ्चालों ने एक ओर से द्रोण पर असंख्य बाणों की वर्षा की, और दूसरी ओर से भीमसेन के नेतृत्व में अन्य वीरों ने उन्हें रोकने का प्रयास किया। पाण्डवों में तीन कुटिलबुद्धि महारथी थे — भीमसेन और दोनों जुड़वाँ पुत्र नकुल तथा सहदेव। उन्होंने धनञ्जय को ऊँचे स्वर में कहा — "हे अर्जुन, शीघ्र आगे बढ़ो और द्रोण के समीप से कौरवों को हटाओ। यदि आचार्य अपने रक्षकों से रहित हो जाएँ, तो पाञ्चाल उन्हें सरलता से परास्त कर सकते हैं।" इस प्रकार कहे जाने पर पार्थ तत्काल कौरवों पर टूट पड़े, और द्रोण धृष्टद्युम्न के नेतृत्व वाले पाञ्चालों पर झपटे। हे भारत, द्रोण के सेनापतित्व के उस पाँचवें दिन भारद्वाजपुत्र ने उन वीर योद्धाओं को अत्यन्त वेग से कुचल दिया।
English Summary
When tha engagement became general and confused, (Yudhishthira) the son of Dharma, addressing all the foremost of warriors among the Panchalas and the Matsyas, said, 'They that are our life, they that are our heads, they amongst us that are endued with great strength, those bulls among men are all engaged with the Dhartarashtras. Why do ye then stand thus, as if stupefied and deprived of your senses ? Proceed thither where those car-warriors of my army are fighting. Driving away your fears and keeping in view the duties of Kshatriyas, (engage in fight), for then conquering or slain ye will gain desirable goals. If you prove victors, you may perform diverse sacrifices with profuse gifts to Brahmanas If, on the other hand, you are slain, becoming then equals of the celestials, you will win many regions of blessedness.' Thus urged by the king, those heroic and mighty car-warriors engaged in battle, observant of Kshatriya duties, quickly proceeded against Drona. The Panchalas then, from one side, assailed Drona with innumerable arrows, while others headed by Bhimasena began to resist him from another side. The Pandavashad three crooked- minded mighty car- warriors amongst them. They were Bhimasena and the twins (Nakula and Sahadeva . These addressed Dhananjaya loudly and said, 'Rush, O Arjuna, with speed and drive away the Kurus from Drona's vicinity. If the preceptor can be^deprived of his protectors, the Panchalas may then slay him easily.' Thus addressed, Partha suddenly rushed against the Kauravas, while Drona rushed against the Panchalas headed by Dhrishtadyumna. Indeed, on that the fifth day (of Drona's command) those heroic combatants, O Bharata, were grounded and crushed with great celerity (by Bharadwaja s son)."
