जो इन्द्र के समान तेजस्वी था। यज्ञ, दान और बुद्धि में उसकी बराबरी पृथ्वी पर किसी ने नहीं की। श्वेताकि ने पञ्चमहायज्ञ और अनेक अन्य यज्ञ किए, जिनमें ब्राह्मणों को सदा विपुल दक्षिणा दी गई। हे राजन्, उस नरेश का हृदय सदा यज्ञों, धार्मिक अनुष्ठानों और विविध प्रकार के दानों में लगा रहता था। महाबुद्धिमान राजा श्वेताकि ने अपने ऋत्विजों की सहायता से अनेक दीर्घ वर्षों तक यज्ञ किए, किन्तु निरन्तर धुएँ से नेत्र पीड़ित होने के कारण वे ऋत्विज अत्यन्त दुर्बल हो गए और उस नरेश के यज्ञों में फिर कभी भाग न लेने की इच्छा से चले गए। राजा ने उन ऋत्विजों को बार-बार बुलाया, किन्तु नेत्रों की पीड़ा के कारण वे उसके यज्ञ में नहीं आए। तब राजा ने अपने ऋत्विजों के आदेश पर उन्हीं के समान अन्य ऋत्विजों को आमन्त्रित किया और आरम्भ किया हुआ यज्ञ पूर्ण किया। कुछ काल बीतने पर राजा श्वेताकि ने एक ऐसा यज्ञ करने की इच्छा की जो सौ वर्षों तक चले। किन्तु उस तेजस्वी नरेश को इसमें सहायता करने वाला कोई पुरोहित न मिला। तब उस विख्यात राजा ने अपने मित्रों और सम्बन्धियों सहित सारा आलस्य त्यागकर, बार-बार साष्टाङ्ग प्रणाम करके, मधुर वचनों से और धन के दान से अपने पुरोहितों को मनाने का अथक प्रयास किया। किन्तु उन सबने उस अमित तेजस्वी राजा के उद्देश्य को पूर्ण करने से मना कर दिया। तब वह राजर्षि क्रोधित होकर अपने आश्रमों में बैठे उन ब्राह्मणों से बोला — हे ब्राह्मणों, यदि मैं पतित होता, अथवा तुम्हारी सेवा और सम्मान में न्यून होता, तो तुम और अन्य ब्राह्मण निःसंकोच मुझे त्याग सकते थे।
English Summary
and who was equal unto Indra himself. No one on earth has equalled him in sacrifices, charity, and intelligence. Swetaki performed the five great sacrifices and many others, at all of which the presents unto Brahmanas were large. The heart of that monarch, O king, was always set upon sacrifices, religious rites, and gifts of all kinds. And king Swetaki of great intelligence, assisted by his Rilwijas performed sacrifices for many long years, till those sacrifical priests with eyes afflicted by the continued smoke and becoming very weak, left that monarch, wishing never more to assist at his sacrifices. The king, how- ever, repeatedly asked those Ritwijas to come to him. But they came not to his sacrifice in consequence of the painful state of their eyes. The king, therefore, invited at the command of his own Rilwijas, others like unto them, and completed the sacrifice that he had begun. After some days had elapsed, king Swetaki desired to perform another sacri- fice which sould extend for a hundred years. But the illustrious monarch obtained not any priest to assist him in It. The celebrated king then, with his friends and relatives, casting off all sloth, repeated- ly courted his priests with great persistence, by bowing down unto them, by conciliatory speeches, and by gifts of wealth. All of them, however, refused to accomplish the purpose which that the king of immeasurable energy had in view. Then that royal sage, getting angry, addressed those Brahmanas sitting in their asylums, and said, — If, ye Brahmanas, I were a fallen person, or, if I were wanting in homage and service to you, I should then deserve to be abandoned without scruple by you and by other Brahmanas at the same time !
