यह सब अपने ही दोषों का फल है — यह जानते हुए तुम्हें पाण्डवों के प्रति कोई दुर्भावना नहीं रखनी चाहिए। वंश, कुल, पिण्डदान और जो कुछ भी सन्तान पर निर्भर करता है — वह सब अब तुम्हारे और गान्धारी के लिए पाण्डवों पर ही आश्रित है। हे कुरुश्रेष्ठ, तुम और यशस्विनी गान्धारी — दोनों को पाण्डवों के प्रति वैर नहीं रखना चाहिए। इन सब बातों पर विचार करो और अपने अपराधों को भी स्मरण करो — पाण्डवों के प्रति सद्भाव रखो। हे भरतकुलश्रेष्ठ, मैं तुम्हें प्रणाम करता हूँ। हे महाबाहु, हे राजश्रेष्ठ, तुम जानते हो कि राजा युधिष्ठिर की भक्ति और तुम्हारे प्रति उनका स्नेह कैसा है। जिन शत्रुओं ने उनके साथ अन्याय किया, उनका भी संहार करके वे दिन-रात जलते रहते हैं और उन्हें मन की शान्ति नहीं मिल पाती। वह नरश्रेष्ठ तुम्हारे और गान्धारी के शोक में व्याकुल होकर किसी भी सुख को प्राप्त नहीं कर पाता। लज्जा से अभिभूत होकर वह तुम्हारे सामने आने का साहस नहीं जुटा पाता — तुम जो अपने पुत्रों के वियोग में जल रहे हो और जिनकी बुद्धि और इन्द्रियाँ उस शोक से विचलित हो गई हैं। यदुकुलश्रेष्ठ ने धृतराष्ट्र से ये वचन कहकर, हे राजन्, शोकमग्न गान्धारी को इन गम्भीर और महत्त्वपूर्ण वचनों से सम्बोधित किया — हे सुबलपुत्री, हे उत्तम व्रतों वाली, मेरी बात सुनो। हे कल्याणी, इस संसार में अभी तुम्हारे समान कोई स्त्री नहीं है। हे रानी, तुम्हें स्मरण होगा वे वचन जो तुमने उस सभा में कहे थे।

Knowing all this to be the fruit of thy own fault, It behoveth thee not to cherish any illfeeling towards the Pandavas 1 Race, line, funeral cake, and what else depends upon offspring, now depend on the Pandavas as regards both thyself and Gandhari ! Thyself, O tiger among the Kurus, and the renowned Gandhari also, should not harbour malice towards the Pandavas. Reflecting upon all this, and thinking also of thy own transgressions, cherish good feeling towards the Pandavas, I bow to thee, O bull of Bharata's race I Thou knowest, O mighty-armed one, what the devotion is of king Yudhishthira and what his affection is towards thee, O tiger among kings I Having caused this slaughter of even foes that wronged him so, he is burning day and night, and hath not succeeded in obtaining peace of mind I That tiger among men, grieving for thee and for Gandhari, faileth to obtain any happiness.
