धृतराष्ट्र ने कहा — पाञ्चालों के राजकुमार शिखण्डी ने क्रोध से भरकर युद्ध में किस प्रकार पितामह भीष्म पर, जो गङ्गापुत्र हैं, धर्मात्मा हैं और नियमित व्रतों का पालन करने वाले हैं, आक्रमण किया? उस अत्यन्त कठिन अवसर पर पाण्डव सेना के कौन-कौन से महारथियों ने शस्त्र उठाए, विजय की अभिलाषा लिए और पूर्ण सक्रियता से शिखण्डी की रक्षा की? शान्तनुपुत्र महातेजस्वी भीष्म ने युद्ध के उस दसवें दिन पाण्डवों और श्रृञ्जयों के साथ किस प्रकार युद्ध किया? मुझे यह सहन नहीं होता कि शिखण्डी ने भीष्म का सामना किया। क्या उस समय भीष्म का रथ टूट गया था अथवा उनका धनुष खण्डित हो गया था? सञ्जय ने कहा — हे भरतकुलश्रेष्ठ, उस युद्ध में लड़ते समय भीष्म का न तो धनुष टूटा था और न ही उनका रथ क्षतिग्रस्त हुआ था। वे सीधे बाणों से शत्रुओं का संहार कर रहे थे। आपकी सेना के हजारों महारथी, हे राजन्, सुसज्जित हाथी और घोड़े — सभी पितामह को आगे करके युद्धभूमि में उतरे। हे कुरुवंशी, अपने व्रत के अनुसार सदा विजयी भीष्म निरन्तर पार्थों की सेना का संहार करते रहे। पाञ्चाल और पाण्डव उस महाधनुर्धर को युद्ध में अपने बाणों से शत्रुओं को मारते देख सहन न कर सके। दसवाँ दिन आते-आते भीष्म ने अपने बाणों से सैकड़ों और हजारों की संख्या में शत्रु सेना को छिन्न-भिन्न कर दिया। हे पाण्डु के अग्रज, उस महाधनुर्धर भीष्म को, जो शूल धारण किए यमराज के समान प्रतीत होते थे, पाण्डुपुत्र युद्ध में परास्त करने में असमर्थ थे।
English Summary
Dhritarashtra said, "How did Sikhandin the prince of the Pancha- las, excited with wrath, rushed in battle against the grandsire, viz., Ganga's son of righteous soul and regulated vows. What mighty car- warriors of the Pandava army, upraised weapons, desirous of victory, and exerting themselves with activity, protected Sikhandin on that occa- sion which required great activity ? How also did Bhishma the son of Santanui endued with great energy, fight on that tenth day of battle 296 MAHABHARATA with the Pandavas and the Srinjayas ? I cannot brook the idea of Sikhandin encountering Bhishma in battle. (Indeed, when Sikhandin attacked Bhishma), was Bhishma's car or his bow broken ?" Sanjaya said, "While fighting in that battle, O bull of Bharata's race, neither the bow nor the car of Bhishma had suffered any injury. He was then slaying the foe with straight shafts. Many thousands of mighty car-warriors belonging to thy army, as also elephants, O king, and steeds well harnessed, proceeded for battle, with the grandsire in the van. Agreeably to his vow, O thou of Kuru's race, the ever- victorious Bhishma was incessantly engaged in slaughtering the troops of the Parthas. The Panchalas and the Pandavas were unable to bear that great bowman battling (with them) and slaying his foes with his shafts. When the tenth day came, the hostile army was torn into pieces by Bhishma with his shafts by hundreds and thousands. O elder brother of Pandu, the sons of Pandu were incapable of defeating in battle the great bowman Bhishma who resembled the Destroyer himself armed with the lance.
