नारद ने कहा — हे मातलि, देखो, क्या यहाँ कोई ऐसा वर है जो श्रेष्ठ गुणों से सम्पन्न हो? यदि ऐसा कोई हो, तो मैं उसके पास जाकर विनयपूर्वक तुम्हारी पुत्री को स्वीकार करने का अनुरोध करूँगा। देखो, इन जलों में एक अण्ड पड़ा है, जो अपनी आभा से दीप्तिमान है। सृष्टि के आरम्भ से ही यह यहाँ विद्यमान है। न यह हिलता है, न फूटता है। इसके जन्म या स्वरूप के विषय में मैंने कभी किसी को कुछ कहते नहीं सुना। इसके पिता या माता कौन हैं, यह कोई नहीं जानता। हे मातलि, ऐसा कहा जाता है कि जब प्रलय का समय आता है, तब इसके भीतर से प्रचण्ड अग्नि प्रकट होती है और फैलकर तीनों लोकों के समस्त चर-अचर प्राणियों को भस्म कर देती है। नारद के ये वचन सुनकर मातलि ने उत्तर दिया — यहाँ मुझे कोई भी योग्य वर नहीं दिखता। अतः बिना विलम्ब किये यहाँ से चलते हैं।
English Summary
"Narada continued, — (continued) Look, O Matali, if there be any bridegroom here, that is distinguished by the possession of superior merits, for then I will go to him for respectfully soliciting him to accept thy daughter. Behold, here lieth an egg in these waters, blazing with beauty. From the commencement of the creation It is here. It moveth not, nor doth It burst. I have never heard any body speaking of its birth or nature. Nobody knoweth who its father or mother is. It is said, O Matali, that when the end of the world coraeth, mighty fire burst forth from within It, and spreading consumeth the three worlds with all their mobile and immobile objects. — Hearing those words of Narada, Matali answered him, saying, — 'No one here seems to me to be eligible. Let us go hence, therefore, without delay I—' '
