तब उस महाबली अर्जुन ने अपने प्रज्वलित बाणों से तुम्हारे योद्धाओं के प्राण उसी प्रकार खींच लिये, जैसे ग्रीष्म ऋतु का सूर्य अपनी तीखी किरणों से तालाबों और झीलों का जल सोख लेता है। दिव्यास्त्रों के बल से युक्त बाणों की वर्षा ने शत्रु-सेना को उसी प्रकार ढक लिया, जैसे सूर्य की किरणें पृथ्वी को आच्छादित कर लेती हैं। धनञ्जय के छोड़े हुए अन्य प्रचण्ड बाण शत्रु-वीरों के हृदयों में उसी सहजता से प्रवेश कर गये, जैसे प्रिय मित्र बिना रोक-टोक के भीतर चले आते हैं। जो भी वीर उस संग्राम में अर्जुन के सामने आये, वे सभी उसी प्रकार नष्ट हो गये जैसे पतंगे प्रज्वलित अग्नि के समीप आकर भस्म हो जाते हैं। इस प्रकार शत्रुओं के प्राण और उनकी कीर्ति दोनों को कुचलते हुए पार्थ उस रणभूमि में साक्षात् मूर्तिमान काल के समान विचरण करते रहे। पार्थ ने अपने बाणों से शत्रुओं के मुकुटों से सुशोभित मस्तक, अङ्गदों से अलंकृत विशाल भुजाएँ और कुण्डलों से युक्त कान काट डाले। हाथी पर सवार योद्धाओं की भाले सहित भुजाएँ, अश्वारोहियों की बर्छियों सहित भुजाएँ, पैदल सैनिकों की ढालों सहित भुजाएँ, रथियों की धनुषों सहित भुजाएँ, और सारथियों की चाबुक तथा अंकुशों सहित भुजाएँ — ये सब पाण्डु-पुत्र ने काट डालीं। प्रज्वलित अग्रभाग वाले बाणों से घिरे धनञ्जय उस समय ऐसे दीप्तिमान दिखते थे, जैसे निरन्तर उठती लपटों और अविरल चिनगारियों से युक्त प्रचण्ड अग्नि। शत्रु-पक्ष के राजा अपना सारा साहस बटोरकर भी समस्त शस्त्रधारियों में श्रेष्ठ, उस अप्रतिम वीर धनञ्जय की ओर दृष्टि तक न उठा सके।

Then the puissant Arjuna, with those blazing shafts of his, sucked the lives of thy warriors like the summer sun sucking with his hot rays the waters of tanks and lakes. Indeed, showers of shafts endued with the force of celestial weapons, ( shot by Arjuna ) covered the hostile army like the rays of the sun covering the earth. Other arrows of fierce energy, sped (by Dhanan- jaya), quickly entered the hearts of (hostile) heroes, like dear friends. Indeed, those brave warriors that came in that battle before Arjuna, all perished like insects approaching a blazing fire. Thus crushing the lives of his foes and their fame, Partha careered in that battle like Death in embodied form. Heads decked with diadems, massive arms adorned with Angadas, and ears with ear-rings of the foes, Partha, cut off with his shafts.
