मेरे सामने! वे धर्मयुक्त और दोनों पक्षों के हित में कहे गए वचन — जिन्हें तुम्हारे पुत्रों ने, हे शुभे, नहीं माना! दुर्योधन, जो विजय का लोभी था, उसे तुमने कठोर वचनों से सम्बोधित किया था। तुमने उससे कहा था — हे मूर्ख, मेरे इन वचनों को सुन: जहाँ धर्म है, वहीं विजय है। हे राजकुमारी, तुम्हारे वे वचन आज सत्य सिद्ध हो गए हैं! यह सब जानते हुए, हे शुभे, अपने हृदय को शोक में मत डुबोओ। पाण्डवों के विनाश की ओर तुम्हारा मन न झुके! अपनी तपस्या के बल से तुम, हे परम भाग्यशालिनी, क्रोध से प्रज्वलित नेत्रों द्वारा इस समस्त पृथ्वी को, उसके चर और अचर प्राणियों सहित, भस्म करने में समर्थ हो। वासुदेव के ये वचन सुनकर गान्धारी ने कहा — हे केशव, जैसा तुम कहते हो, वैसा ही है। शोक में जलता हुआ मेरा हृदय विचलित हो गया था। किन्तु तुम्हारे वचन सुनकर, हे जनार्दन, वह हृदय फिर स्थिर हो गया है। इस अन्धे और अब पुत्रहीन हो चुके वृद्ध राजा के लिए तुम, हे पुरुषश्रेष्ठ, पाण्डु के उन वीर पुत्रों सहित, अब एकमात्र आश्रय हो। इतना कहकर गान्धारी, अपने पुत्रों की मृत्यु के शोक में जलती हुई, अपना मुख वस्त्र से ढककर ऊँचे स्वर में विलाप करने लगी। तब महाबाहु केशव ने उस शोकाकुल राजकुमारी को प्रत्यक्ष दृष्टान्तों से युक्त तर्कपूर्ण वचनों द्वारा सान्त्वना दी। गान्धारी और धृतराष्ट्र को सान्त्वना देने के पश्चात् मधुवंशी केशव को अन्तर्ज्ञान से ज्ञात हुआ कि द्रोण के पुत्र के मन में कोई दुष्ट विचार उत्पन्न हो रहा है।
English Summary
in my presence! those words fraught with righteousness and that were beneficial to both parties,— which thy sons, O auspicious lady, did not obey ! Duryodhana who coveted victory was addressed by thee in bitter words! Thou toldst him then. — Listen, 0 fool, to these words of mine, viz., thither ia victory where righteousness is. Those words of thine, O princess, have now been accomplished ! Knowing all this, O auspici- ous lady, do not set thy heart on sorrow. Let not thy heart incline to- wards the destruction of the Pandavas ! In consequence of the strength of thy penancesi thou art able, O highly blessed one, to burn, with thy eyes kindled with rage, the whole Earth with her mobile and immobile creatures!' Hearing these words of Vasudeva, Gandhari said, 'It is even so, O Kesava, as thou sayest ! My heart, buring in grief, has been unsteadied ! After hearing thy words, however, that heart, O Janar- dana, hath again become steady. As regards the blind old king, now become childless, thou, O foremost of men, with those heroes, viz., the sons of Pandu, hast become his refuge !' Having said so much, Gan- dhari, burning in grief on account of the death of her sons, covered her face with her cloth and began to weep aloud. The mighty-armed lord Kesava then comforted the grief-stricken princess with words that were fraught with reasons drawn from visible instances. Having comforted Gandhari and Dhritarashtra, Kesava of Madhu's race came to know ( by intuition ) the evil that was meditated by Drona's son.
