हे नागश्रेष्ठ, मैं स्वर्ग में देवताओं के अधिपति इन्द्र के पास चलूँगा। वहाँ मैं सुपर्ण के मार्ग में विघ्न उत्पन्न करने का प्रयत्न करूँगा, और अन्तिम उपाय के रूप में हम सुमुख को प्राप्त आयु का निश्चय करेंगे। हे नाग, तुम्हारा कल्याण हो — इसलिए सुमुख हमारे साथ देवराज के समक्ष चले। यह कहकर वे सुमुख को साथ लेकर चले, और वे चारों महातेजस्वी स्वर्ग में पहुँचकर देवाधिपति शक्र को अपनी पूर्ण महिमा में विराजमान देखकर प्रसन्न हुए। संयोगवश उस समय चतुर्भुज भगवान विष्णु भी वहाँ उपस्थित थे। तब नारद ने माताली और उसके विवाह-चयन की सम्पूर्ण कथा वहाँ निवेदन की। काण्व ने आगे कहा — नारद के वचन सुनकर भगवान विष्णु ने जगत के स्वामी पुरन्दर को आदेश दिया — इस युवक को अमृत दिया जाए और इसे देवताओं के समान अमर किया जाए। हे वासव, तुम्हारी कृपा से माताली, नारद और सुमुख — तीनों की अभिलाषा पूर्ण हो। किन्तु पुरन्दर ने विनता-पुत्र के पराक्रम का स्मरण करते हुए विष्णु से कहा — अमृत आप ही इसे प्रदान करें। इस पर विष्णु ने कहा — आप समस्त चर और अचर प्राणियों के स्वामी हैं। हे प्रभो, ऐसा कौन है जो आपके द्वारा दिए जाने योग्य वरदान को अस्वीकार करे? इन वचनों पर शक्र ने उस नाग को दीर्घायु का वरदान दिया। वल और वृत्र के संहारक ने उसे अमृतपान नहीं कराया। सुमुख ने वह वरदान पाकर वास्तव में सुमुख हो गया, क्योंकि उसका मुख आनन्द के चिह्नों से दीप्त हो उठा। माताली की पुत्री से विवाह करके वह प्रसन्नचित्त अपने घर लौट गया। नारद और आर्यक भी अपना उद्देश्य सफल होने पर हर्षपूर्ण हृदय से देवताओं के तेजस्वी अधिपति की पूजा-अर्चना करके वहाँ से विदा हुए।
English Summary
heaven, the chief of the celestials, O best of Nagaa. I shall then endeavour to place obstacles in the way of Suparna, and as a last resource, we will ascertain the period of life that hath been vouchsafed to Sumukha. Bleesed be thou, O Naga, let Sumukha, therefore, come with me to the presence of the Lord of the celestials.* Saying this, they took Sumukha with them, and all the four, endued with great splendour, coming to heaven beheld Sakra the chief of the gods seated in all his glory. And It so happened that the illustrious Vishnu of four arms was also present there. Narada then represented the whole story about Matali and his choice." "Kanwa continued, — 'Hearing all that Narada said, Vishnu directed Purandara, the Lord of the universe, saying, — Let Amrita be given to this youth, and .let him be made immortal like gods themselves. Let Matali, and Narada, and Sumukha, O Vasava, all attain their cherished wish through thy grace.— Purandara, however, reflecting on the prowess of Vinata's son, said unto Vishnu, — Let Amrita be given unto him by thee, — Thus addressed, Vishnu said, — 'Thou art the Lord of all mobile and immobile creatures. Who is there, O lord, that would refuse a gift that may be made by thee ?' — At these words1 Sakra gave unto that Naga length of days. The Slayer of Vala and Vritra did not make him a drinker of Amrita. Sumukha, having obtained that boon, became Sumukha* (in reality) for his face was suffused with marks of joy. And having married Matali's daughter, he cheerfully returned home. And Narada and Aryaka also filled with delight at the success of their object, went away, after having worship- ped the glorious chief of the celestials.' '
