सूत-पुत्र के हाथों युद्ध में इस प्रकार संहार किए जाने पर श्रृञ्जय वीर बार-बार अर्जुन और वासुदेव को पुकारने लगे — जैसे यम के लोक में मृत आत्माएँ अपनी रक्षा के लिए यम को पुकारती हैं। कर्ण के बाणों से कटती सेना के वे करुण क्रन्दन सुनकर और भार्गव अस्त्र के भयंकर प्रकोप को देखकर कुन्ती-पुत्र धनञ्जय ने वासुदेव से ये वचन कहे — "हे महाबाहु कृष्ण, भार्गव अस्त्र का यह पराक्रम देखो! इसे किसी भी उपाय से विफल नहीं किया जा सकता। हे कृष्ण, इस महासंग्राम में सूत-पुत्र को भी देखो — क्रोध से भरा हुआ, अपने पराक्रम में साक्षात् काल के समान, और यह भीषण कर्म करने में लगा हुआ। वह निरन्तर अपने अश्वों को हाँकता हुआ बार-बार क्रोध-भरी दृष्टि से मुझे देख रहा है। मैं युद्ध में कर्ण से पलायन कभी नहीं करूँगा। जो जीवित है, उसे युद्ध में जय या पराजय — दोनों में से कोई एक मिल सकती है। किन्तु हे हृषीकेश, जो मर जाता है, उसके लिए मृत्यु ही विजय है। जो मृत है, उसकी पराजय कैसी?" पार्थ के इन वचनों को सुनकर कृष्ण ने उन बुद्धिमानों में श्रेष्ठ और शत्रु-दमन करने वाले अर्जुन को अवसर के अनुकूल ये उत्तर दिया — "कर्ण ने कुन्ती के राजपुत्र को गहरे घावों से जर्जर कर दिया है। पहले उनके पास जाकर उन्हें सान्त्वना दो, तत्पश्चात्

The Srinjayas then, thus slaughtered in battle by the Suta's son, repeatedly called upon Arjuna and Vasudeva like the spirits of the dead within Yama's dominions calling upon Yama to rescue them. Hearing those wails of the troops slaughtered with Kama's shafts, and beholding the terrible Bhargava weapon invoked into existence Kunti's son Dhananjaya said unto Vasudeva these words, 'Behold, O Krishna of mighty arms, the prowess of the Bhargava weapon ! It cannot, by any means, be baffled ! Behold the Suta's son also, O Krishna, filled with rage in this great battle and resembling the Destroyer himself, in prowess and employed in achieving such a fierce feat !
