हे राजन्, वह पापी दैत्यपुत्र, जिसकी शक्ति को रोकना असम्भव था, उसने भी मुझ पर हजारों-हजारों बाणों की वर्षा आरम्भ कर दी। हे भारत, उसने मेरे सैनिकों पर, मेरे सारथी पर और मेरे अश्वों पर बाणों की झड़ी लगा दी। किन्तु हम उन बाणों की चिन्ता किये बिना युद्ध करते रहे। तब शाल्व के अनुयायी योद्धाओं ने भी मुझ पर हजारों सीधे बाण छोड़े। उन असुरों ने मेरे अश्वों को, मेरे रथ को और दारुक को ऐसे बाणों से ढक दिया जो प्राणों तक को भेद सकते थे। हे वीर, उस समय मुझे न अपने अश्व दिखे, न अपना रथ और न ही अपना सारथी दारुक। मैं और मेरी सेना — सभी शस्त्रों से आच्छादित हो गये। हे कुन्तीपुत्र, तब मैंने भी अपने धनुष से मन्त्रों से अभिमन्त्रित दसों हजार बाण छोड़े, क्योंकि मैं शस्त्र-विद्या में अलौकिक दक्षता रखता था। किन्तु वह बहुमूल्य धातुओं से निर्मित विमान आकाश में दो कोस की दूरी पर था, इसलिए हे भारत, मेरी सेना उसे देख न सकी। वे सब रणभूमि पर खड़े रहकर दर्शकों की भाँति देखते रहे और सिंहनाद तथा करतल-ध्वनि से मुझे उत्साहित करते रहे। हस्त-प्रयोग से छोड़े गये वे रंगीन बाण दानवों के शरीरों में काटने वाले कीड़ों की भाँति घुस गये। तब उस बहुमूल्य विमान में उन दानवों की चीत्कारें उठने लगीं जो उन तीखे बाणों के घावों से घायल होकर महासागर के जल में गिर रहे थे।
