उन्होंने उन नगरों पर चारों ओर से वज्र का प्रहार किया। किन्तु जब पुरन्दर उन नगरों को भेद न सका — जिन्हें ब्रह्माजी ने अपने वरदानों से अभेद्य बना दिया था — तब हे राजन्, देवराज भय से भर गए। वे उन नगरों को छोड़कर समस्त देवताओं के साथ उस शत्रु-दमनकारी पितामह के पास गए और उन्हें असुरों द्वारा किए जा रहे अत्याचारों का वृत्तान्त सुनाया। सब कुछ निवेदन करके और पितामह के चरणों में मस्तक झुकाकर उन्होंने उनसे पूछा कि त्रिपुर का विनाश किस उपाय से हो सकता है। दिव्य पितामह ने इन्द्र के वचन सुनकर देवताओं से कहा — "जो तुम्हारा अपराधी है, वह मेरा भी अपराधी है। ये असुर दुष्टात्मा हैं और सदा देवताओं से द्वेष रखते हैं। जो तुम्हें पीड़ा देते हैं, वे मेरे भी अपराधी हैं। मैं सभी प्राणियों के प्रति समभाव रखता हूँ — इसमें कोई सन्देह नहीं। तथापि जो अधर्मी हैं, उनका वध होना चाहिए — यह मेरा अटल संकल्प है। उन तीनों नगरों को एक ही बाण से भेदना होगा। इसके अतिरिक्त अन्य किसी उपाय से उनका नाश सम्भव नहीं है। स्थाणु के अतिरिक्त कोई अन्य एक बाण से उन्हें भेदने में समर्थ नहीं है। हे आदित्यगण, स्थाणु को — जो ईशान और जिष्णु भी कहलाते हैं और जो कर्म से कभी नहीं थकते — अपना योद्धा चुनो। वही उन असुरों का संहार करेंगे।" यह वचन सुनकर शक्र के नेतृत्व में समस्त देवता, ब्रह्माजी को आगे करके, वृषभ-चिह्नधारी देव की शरण में गए। वे धर्मनिष्ठ देवगण कठोरतम तपस्या में रत ऋषियों के साथ, वेदों के सनातन मन्त्रों का उच्चारण करते हुए, पूर्ण श्रद्धा और एकाग्र मन से भव की शरण में पहुँचे।
English Summary

When, however Purandra failed to pierce those cities made impenetrable, O king, by the Creator with his boons, the chief of celestials, filled with fear, and leaving those cities, repaired with those very gods to that chastiser of foes, viz., the Grand- sire, for representing unto him the oppressions committed by the Asuraa. Representing everything and bowing with their heads unto him, they asked the divine Grandsire the means by which the triple city could be destroyed. The illustrious Deity, hearing the words of Indra, told the gods, 'He that is an offender against you offends against me also. The Asuraa are all of wicked souls and always hate the gods. They that give pain to you always offend against me. lam impartial to all creatures. There is no doubt in this. For all that, however, they that are un- rightous should be slain. This is my fixed vow. Those three forts are to be pierced with one shaft, By no other means can their destruc- tion be effected. None else, save Sthanu, is competent to pierce them with one shaft. Ye Adityas, select Sthanu, otherwise called Ishana and Jishnu, who is never fatigued with work, as your warrior. It is he that will destroy those Asuras.' Hearing these words of his, the gods with Sakra at their head, making Brahman take their lead, sought the protection of the Deity having the bull for his mark. Those righteous ones acompanied by Riihia devoted to the severest penances and utter- ing the eternal words of the Vedas, sought Bhava with their whole soul.
