सञ्जय ने कहा — हे राजन्, उस भीषण युद्ध में, जिसमें असंख्य क्षत्रिय धराशायी हो रहे थे, गाण्डीव की प्रचण्ड टंकार उस स्थान के कोलाहल से भी ऊपर सुनाई दे रही थी, जहाँ पाण्डु के पुत्र संशप्तकों, कोसलों और नारायण सेना का संहार कर रहे थे। क्रोध से भरे और विजय की अभिलाषा लिए संशप्तक उस युद्ध में अर्जुन पर बाणों की वर्षा करने लगे। परन्तु हे राजन्, पराक्रमी पार्थ ने उन बाणों की वर्षा को शीघ्र ही रोककर उस युद्ध में प्रवेश किया और अनेक श्रेष्ठ रथियों का वध करने लगे। काँक के पंखों से युक्त अपने तीखे बाणों के बल पर उस रथ-सेना के मध्य में घुसकर पार्थ का सामना उत्तम अस्त्रों से सज्जित सुशर्मा से हुआ। उस श्रेष्ठ रथी ने अर्जुन पर बाणों की घनघोर वर्षा की। इसी बीच संशप्तकों ने भी पार्थ को अपने बाणों से आच्छादित कर दिया। तब सुशर्मा ने पार्थ को दस बाणों से बेधकर जनार्दन की दाहिनी भुजा में तीन बाण मारे। हे राजन्, फिर उसने एक चौड़े फल वाले बाण से अर्जुन की ध्वजा को भी बेध दिया। इस पर देवशिल्पी के हाथों निर्मित वह विशालकाय श्रेष्ठ वानर ऊँचे स्वर में गर्जना करने लगा और अत्यन्त भयंकर रूप से दहाड़ा, जिससे आपकी सेना भयभीत हो उठी। वानर की उस गर्जना को सुनकर आपकी सेना भय से व्याकुल हो गई। महान् भय के प्रभाव से वह सेना पूर्णतः निश्चेष्ट हो गई। हे राजन्, उस निश्चेष्ट अवस्था में खड़ी वह सेना विविध पुष्पों के भार से लदे चित्ररथ वन के समान सुन्दर दिखाई दे रही थी। तब हे कुरुश्रेष्ठ, उन वीरों ने चेत प्राप्त करके अर्जुन पर बाणों की ऐसी वर्षा करनी आरम्भ की जैसे मेघ पर्वतों पर जल बरसाते हैं। तत्पश्चात् उन सबने पाण्डव के महारथ को चारों ओर से घेर लिया।

Sanjaya said, "During the progress of that battle in which so many Kshatriyas sank down, the loud twang of Gandiva, O sire, was heard above the din on that spot, O king, where the son of Pandu was engaged in slaughtering the Samsaptakas, the Kosalas, and the Narayana forces. Filled with rage and longing for v ictory, the Samsaptakas, in that battle, began to pour showers of arrows on Arjuna's head. The puissant Partha, however, quickly checking those arrowy showers, O king, plunged into that battle, and began to slay many foremost of car-warriors. Plunging into the midst of that division of cars with the aid of his whetted shafts equipt with Kanka feathers, Partha came upon Susarman of excellent weapons. That foremost of car- warriors poured on Arjuna thick showers of arrows. Meanwhile the Samsaptakas also cov ered Partha with their shafts. Then Susarman, piercing Partha with ten shafts, struck Janardana with three in the right arm. With a broad-headed arrow then, O sire, he pierced the standard of Arjuna. Thereupon that fore- most of apes, of huge dimensions, the handiwork of the celestial artificer himself, began to utter loud sounds and roared very fiercely, af righting thy troops. Hearing the roars of the ape, thy army became inspired with fear. Indeed, under the influence of a great fear, that army became perfectly inactive.
