काण्व ने कहा — जब मातलि अपने पथ पर चला जा रहा था, तब उसने महर्षि नारद को देखा, जो अपनी इच्छा से जल के देवता वरुण के दर्शन हेतु जा रहे थे। मातलि को देखकर नारद ने उससे पूछा — "हे सारथि, तुम कहाँ जा रहे हो? क्या यह यात्रा तुम्हारे अपने किसी कार्य से है, अथवा शतक्रतु के आदेश पर?" इस प्रकार अपने गन्तव्य की ओर जाते हुए नारद ने मार्ग में मातलि से यह प्रश्न किया, और मातलि ने विधिपूर्वक उन्हें अपने अभियान का सम्पूर्ण वृत्तान्त सुनाया। सब कुछ जानकर ऋषि ने मातलि से कहा — "हम दोनों साथ चलेंगे। मैं स्वर्ग छोड़कर जलाधिपति के दर्शन के लिए ही आया हूँ। पाताल लोक में खोज करते हुए मैं तुम्हें सब कुछ बताऊँगा। वहाँ भली-भाँति अन्वेषण करके हम एक योग्य वर का चयन करेंगे, हे मातलि!" तत्पश्चात् वह तेजस्वी युगल — मातलि और नारद — पाताल में प्रवेश कर उस जगत् के अधिपति, जलेश्वर वरुण के दर्शन को पहुँचे। वहाँ नारद को दिव्य ऋषि के योग्य सम्मान प्राप्त हुआ और मातलि को महेन्द्र के समतुल्य पूजा मिली। दोनों ही कार्यकुशल थे; उन्होंने वरुण को अपने प्रयोजन से अवगत कराया और उनकी अनुमति पाकर नाग-लोक में विचरण करने लगे। तब उस पाताल-लोक के समस्त निवासियों को जानने वाले नारद ने अपने साथी मातलि को नाग-जगत् के वासियों का विस्तारपूर्वक परिचय देना आरम्भ किया।
English Summary
' Kanwa said.— 'When Matali was wending his way, he saw the great Rishi Narada proceeding at his pleasure to pay a visit to Varuna (the god of the waters). And beholding Matali, Narada asked him, saying,— 'Whither dost thou go ? Is It, O charioteer, on any mission of thy own, or is It at Satakratu's command, that this journey of thine is under- taken ?'— Thus addressed on the way by Narada who was proceeding towards his destination, Matali duly informed Narada, of his mission. And the Rishi, informed of everything, then said unto Matali,— 'We shall go together. As regards myself, It is to see the Lord of the waters that I am proceeding, having left the heavens, searching the nether regions, I shall tell you everything. After a good search there, we shall select a bridegroom, O Matali !" — And penetrating then into nether regions, that illustrious couple, Matali and Narada, beheld that Regent of the world— the Lord of the waters. A id there Narada received worship due to a celestial Rishi, and Matali received that equal to what is offered to the great Indra. And both of them skilful in business, informed Varuna of their purpose, and obtaining his leave they began to wander in that region of the Nagas. And Narada who knew all the residents of the nether region then began to describe in detail unto his companion all about the dwellers of the Naga world.
